Tips and Tricks for a Paws-itively Perfect Dog Portrait Session!

Get ready to capture your furry best friend's unique personality! To ensure a smooth and successful portrait session, here are some tips and tricks to help you and your dog prepare:

Before the Session:

  • Exercise is Key (But Not Too Much!): A well-exercised dog is a happy and more cooperative dog. Aim for a good walk or play session a few hours before our shoot to burn off some excess energy. However, avoid over-exercising them right before, as they might be too tired or panting heavily for photos.
  • Grooming Matters: Give your dog a good brush before the session. If they're getting a professional groom, aim for it a few days beforehand so they're settled in and looking their best. Clean eyes and ears are also a plus!
  • Hunger Levels: A slightly hungry dog is often more motivated by treats. Consider feeding them a smaller meal than usual a few hours before the session, or skip their meal entirely and use their kibble as high-value rewards during the shoot.
  • Practice Makes Perfect (Kind Of): If your dog knows basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "come," a little refresher can be helpful. Don't stress if they're not perfect – we'll work with their natural inclinations!
  • Pack Their Favorite Things:
    • High-Value Treats: Think small, soft, and extra smelly treats that your dog absolutely loves. Variety is good too!
    • Favorite Toys: Bring a squeaky toy, a ball, or anything that gets their attention and makes them happy.
    • Comfort Items: A favorite blanket or bed can sometimes help a nervous dog feel more at ease.
    • Water & Bowl: Essential for keeping your dog hydrated, especially if we're shooting outdoors.
    • Leash & Collar (and a backup!): Even if your dog is off-leash trained, we'll need these for safety and control. Consider a thinner or less distracting collar for photos if you have one
  • Communicate Any Concerns: If your dog has any anxieties, fears (e.g., loud noises, other dogs), or special needs, please let me know in advance. This helps me tailor the session to their comfort.

During the Session:

  • Relax and Have Fun! Your dog can pick up on your energy. If you're stressed, they're more likely to be stressed. Take a deep breath and enjoy the process!
  • Be Prepared to Help: Your assistance with holding treats, making silly noises, or getting your dog's attention will be invaluable. We're a team!
  • Let Me Guide You: I'll be directing you on where to stand, how to hold your dog, and what to do to get the best shots. Trust the process!
  • Patience is a Virtue: Sometimes it takes a little time for a dog to settle in and get comfortable. We'll take breaks if needed and go at their pace.
  • Don't Worry About Perfection: Some of the most charming photos are of a dog mid-blink, with a goofy expression, or even a little bit blurry from excitement. Embrace the authenticity!
  • Be Safe: We'll always prioritize your dog's safety. If we're in an unfamiliar area, keeping them on a leash may be necessary for part or all of the session.
  • Also remember: One of the photos is a "family portrait" so everyone will be in the photo with the pet. Unless you opt-out. A family photo is included in your package.

By following these tips, we'll be well on our way to creating beautiful, lasting memories of your beloved canine companion! I can't wait to meet you and your dog!
